A Minnesota man has invented a small gun that folds up and looks an awful lot like a cell phone. He says the gadget is meant for people who want to carry a gun without freaking people out about it.

Kirk Kjellberg says he was sitting at a restaurant when a small child called him out for having a gun and he was the focus of attention.

When a little child – a boy about 7 – saw me and said, ‘Mommy, mommy that guy’s got a gun,’ and the whole restaurant of course turns and stares at you, and I thought there’s just got to be something better to do than this.”

So he invented a device called the Ideal Conceal. It’s a cell phone sized, two shot, Derringer-style gun.

The idea has sparked quite a debate on social media, with some calling it stupid and saying it should be illegal. Kjellberg says for him and other gun carriers, it’s all about convenience.

“It’s more so for people that want to be able to carry a gun when they need to and not to have engage other people about why they’re carrying that gun.”

Kjellberg says the plastic gun with a metal core is not a security threat at places like airports. He says he’s been contacted by Homeland Security and is willing to provide law enforcement with X-rays of they weapon so they can train officers to recognize it.

The Ideal Conceal is not on the market yet, but you can expect to see it on sale in October for $395
