Chinese motorists who blind others by using their high beams at night are being forced to stare into the bright light as punishment. Cops in the southeastern city of Shenzhen reportedly came up with the bizarre sanction after several accidents in Guangdong province were blamed on the issue.

Introduced on Aug. 1, several photographs have already emerged showing offenders blinking into beaming car bulbs. Critics say the initiative is “tantamount to corporal punishment” and claim that some culprits were forced to stare into the light for five minutes, reports CRJEnglish.com.

But a Shenzhen traffic police bureau spokesman said, “Overall the vast majority of people have approved the initiative,” according to the Daily Star. And he insisted that suspects, who also had to pay a $50 fine, were only held for a few seconds.

“A short time is enough to give people an idea of what the other driver is seeing and to be more considerate in the future,” he said. “We don’t want to punish them by causing pain or damaging their eyes,” he told the Daily Star.
