Officials with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality collected samples of the unknown substance but have yet to comment further. Several locals believe the nearby Selfridge Air National Guard Base is responsible.

The Base denies those claims, saying in a statement, “There is no indication that the substance in question came from a military aircraft of any type.” The fire chief told WXYZ ‘it’s not bird droppings, and it’s not flammable.
