The cavern which is six and half feet deep was first spotted when home owner Emma James was mowing the lawn. But the cause is still a mystery – as is where the spooky steps into the dark lead to?

The stairs leading down into the two-by-two feet hole which is currently not big enough to squeeze down. Emma, 45, and her husband Kevin, 48, even contacted the company who built the house back in 1984.

Yet they have so far had no luck of finding out where the hole goes.  Emma said:

It is really odd as there are steps which lead down but we don’t know what to and there was no lid or cover on it. We first thought it had a metal casing but there is concrete down there with metal steps. It just seems as though it has been forgotten about but there must be a planning record somewhere to explain what it is.

“We just want someone to come out and tell us what it is so we can sort it out – I don’t want to just leave a hole in my front lawn. I don’t want to fill it in in case there is something historic down there but it could just be a septic tank or something. It’s just a mystery at the moment.”

We haven’t dug anymore around it as I’m not sure if it is safe and I don’t want to make it worse. I just hope that another hole doesn’t suddenly appear. Nobody wants to know about it and all we need is somebody to come out and have a look and tell us what it is and what we can do about it.

“Someone could fall down it. Over Christmas we had the cars parked on there so they could have gone in.”

Kevin has contacted the local council and utility companies but no-one is claiming responsibility for the hole. So as a safety precaution they have been using a couple of cones and a piece of wood to keep people from falling into it.
